Award-winning author Erin Bartels will present an informative and illustrated talk about obstacles women artists have faced in the past and the things we all let get in our way of creating today.
For centuries, women were excluded from art academies, life drawing classes, and the careers of professional artists. Even so, many women still found ways to learn to paint and much of their work is being rediscovered.
In this virtual talk, Erin Bartels will outline the life and work of four female artists in France in the late 1800s who, while contemporaries of one another, approached their art and their lives in different ways as they attempted to navigate societal restrictions and cultural expectations of what women should do and what they were even capable of doing. Then she'll bring the issue into the present, unpacking the ways we all tend to restrict ourselves from creating and sharing our creations today, even though societal norms have changed and we enjoy unprecedented freedom to choose. She'll also talk briefly about how her exploration of women artists made its way into her latest novel, The Lady with the Dark Hair.
Erin Bartels is the author of We Hope for Better Things, The Words Between Us, All That We Carried, The Girl Who Could Breathe Under Water, and Everything Is Just Beginning. A two-time Christy finalist and winner of two WFWA Star Awards and two Michigan Notable Book Awards.
