Presented by the Georgia Center for the Book, Gwinnett County Public Library, and the AJC Decatur Book Festival. This week's event is hosted by Nicki Salcedo in conversation with P. Djèlí Clark and Nghi Vo.
This year, author Joshilyn Jackson and her co-captain, Atlanta author and journalist Nicki Salcedo, have curated a selection of some of the year's best reads, including this week’s event in conversation with P. Djèlí Clark and Nghi Vo.
About P. Djèlí Clark:
Phenderson Djéli Clark is the award-winning author of the novellas Ring Shout, The Black God’s Drums, and The Haunting of Tram Car 015. Born in New York and raised mostly in Houston, Texas, he spent the early formative years of his life in the homeland of his parents, Trinidad and Tobago. When not writing speculative fiction, P. Djèlí Clark works as an academic historian whose research spans comparative slavery and emancipation in the Atlantic World.
A Master of Djinn: Cairo, 1912 - Though Fatma el-Sha’arawi is the youngest woman working for the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities, she’s certainly not a rookie, especially after preventing the destruction of the universe last summer. Alongside her Ministry colleagues and a familiar person from her past, Agent Fatma must unravel the mystery behind this imposter to restore peace to the city—or face the possibility he could be exactly who he seems…
About Nghi Vo:
Nghi Vo is the author of the acclaimed novellas The Empress of Salt and Fortune and When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain. Born in Illinois, she now lives on the shores of Lake Michigan. She believes in the ritual of lipstick, the power of stories, and the right to change your mind.
The Chosen and the Beautiful is her debut novel. Jordan Baker grows up in the most rarefied circles of 1920s American society—she has money, education, a killer golf handicap, and invitations to some of the most exclusive parties of the Jazz Age. She’s also queer and Asian, a Vietnamese adoptee treated as an exotic attraction by her peers, while the most important doors remain closed to her.
Nghi Vo’s debut novel The Chosen and the Beautiful reinvents this classic of the American canon as a coming-of-age story full of magic, mystery, and glittering excess, and introduces a major new literary voice.
Tickets are free and open to the public. Registration is required.
