Join Gwinnett County Public Library and The Gwinnett Remembrance Coalition for a community conversation. The Gwinnett Remembrance Project acknowledges, remembers, and educates the community about the county?s violent and racist past.
Shortly after midnight on April 8, 1911, a mob of at least 200 white men lynched a Black man named Charles Hale in downtown Lawrenceville. Gwinnett County Public Library in partnership with the Gwinnett Remembrance Coalition will present a panel discussion about this incident and how it impacted and continues to impact Mr. Hale’s family and the Gwinnett community.
The panel will also discuss the efforts of the Gwinnett Remembrance Coalition, working closely with Bryan Stevenson’s Equal Justice Initiative, to memorialize Mr. Hale through a recent soil collection ceremony at his lynching site and the upcoming dedication of a historical marker there. To learn more about the excellent work the coalition is doing visit their website - https://gwinnett-remembrance.weebly.com/.
The Gwinnett Remembrance Project honors the memory of Gwinnett’s victims of racial violence – those whose names are known to us and those whose names are lost to history – by working with the Equal Justice Initiative to erect a fitting memorial that inspires the community to come together, fosters conversations about historical and current injustices, and enables dialogue, trust, and healing.
