This nutritional program series will help participants enhance knowledge and facilitate healthy behavior change across the lifespan.
Through cooking demonstrations, we will show participants how to increase vegetables, whole grains, and fruits to focus on the impact of chronic disease-preventative lifestyle behaviors.
- Tuesday, March 25 - Functional Foods and Nutritional Benefits: Functional foods are a fast-growing trend in America. Right now the food industry is developing and marketing these foods so quickly that it?s hard for scientists and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to keep up. Grocery stores are already filled with numerous foods that would meet the definition of functional foods.
- Tuesday, April 29 - Basics of Food Preservation: Preserving your garden?s bounty from one year to the next, knowing exactly what is in your food, and making special gifts for special friends are some reasons for canning foods at home. Learn how to can vegetables, fruits, and meats, what process to do, and what equipment to use. She will also be checking the dial gauge of your pressure canner lid, so you are sure your pressure canner is ready for safely canning your produce. Brands to be tested are: National, Magic Seal, Maid of Honor, Kook-Kwick, and Presto.
- Tuesday, May 27 - Calcium Sources: Are you counting on your bones to last a lifetime? This program will tell you how to take now to keep your bones strong later.
