Join GCPL in an open discussion of social issues that affect our community. For the month of December, we discuss the book "Unruly Women: Race, Neocolonialism, and the Hijab with author Falguni A. Sheth" - which explores the racial dynamics of juridical discourses that discipline Muslim women of color and Black Muslim women in the United States.
Author and professor, Falguni A. Sheth's book focuses on the discrimination claims of Muslim women, by examining juridical and political approaches that dismiss Muslim women and other populations of color as culturally backward, misguided in their thinking, and gratuitously nonconformist.
Falguni A. Sheth is a Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Emory University. She holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy and has published numerous articles and books, including Toward a Political Philosophy of Race (SUNY Press, 2009) and Unruly Women: Race, Neoliberalism, and the Hijab (Oxford University Press, 2022). Sheth’s areas of teaching and research include postcolonial theory, transnational feminist studies, critical philosophy of race and race studies, feminist political theory, anticolonial and empire studies, and political and legal philosophy.
Gwinnett County Public Library presents a bi-monthly discussion club that explores articles about race, gender, immigration, poverty, and criminal justice issues. It is intended to give our community the opportunity to explore current social issues more deeply. Join us every third Thursday of every other month from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm via Zoom. See you there!
