1:45 pm - 2:45 pm Speaker 1 - Susan Stockdale: Adventures in Writing for Little Readers
In “Adventures in Writing for Little Readers,” author-illustrator Susan Stockdale takes you behind the scenes of her vibrant picture books that bring the natural world to life. She shares her creative process, from crafting expository text and rhyming verses to collaborating with scientists for factual accuracy. Susan highlights how rhythmic rhyme enhances language skills, helping children predict words and recognize patterns. With a focus on dynamic verbs, vivid synonyms and sparkly alliteration, she demonstrates how she invites children to delight in the richness of language.
Susan Stockdale is the author and illustrator of 11 picture books that illuminate fascinating themes in nature. Her books, such as Stripes of All Types and Bring On the Birds, have earned top honors from the American Library Association, the National Council of Teachers of English and the National Science Teachers Association. Susan’s vibrant illustrations and engaging text win praise. The Washington Post wrote, “If the paintings are the feast, Stockdale’s words are the dessert.” Her 2025 book is Don’t Eat the Cleaners! 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm Speaker 2 - John Tures: Publishing Short Stories and Essays
Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and raised in El Paso, Texas, John A. Tures was first published writing sports for the El Paso Herald-Post in high school. He wrote for his college paper at Trinity University in San Antonio and at Marquette University. He worked his way through graduate school in education outreach for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He earned his doctorate in political science at Florida State University, analyzed data in Washington DC, and is now a professor at LaGrange College in Georgia. He has written a weekly column since the Fall of 2004. He has also written for a number of newspapers and magazines and has published more than thirty short stories in various genres, from thrillers and mysteries to nonfiction and flash fiction.
John A. Tures will be talking about lessons learned in getting short stories published, as well as some strategies to help aspiring authors, or even experienced ones, in terms of where to target these, as well as the suggested length, and helpful resources. He will show how to use a spreadsheet to track these submissions and explain why it is necessary to do so. He’ll also discuss writing columns for newspapers and magazines and what has been learned over twenty years of doing so. Finally, he will discuss plans for a College 101 class where new student writing can serve as a metaphor for career planning. His talk will involve activities that audience members can also do.
