Join award winning author Carmen Agra Deedy and her daughter, debut author Lauren Agra Deedy as they help us kick off summer reading by talking about their new picture books!
We are having a Summer Reading Kick-Off Author Signing Event with Carmen & Lauren Agra Deedy!
Carmen will be reading her new book, The Peanut Man. Illustrated by the award winning Raúl Colón, The Peanut Man is the story of a Cuban refugee and her joy in an unexpected encounter that connects her beloved home in Havana with her new home in Atlanta.
Lauren will be reading her debut picture book, New Shoes for Leo. Award-winning artist Susan Gal joins forces with Lauren in this charming, heartfelt picture book story about an immigrant family?and their love and caring for family they left behind.
This program is sponsored by Georgia Public Library System and funded through the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Books will be available for sale and signing by Little Shop of Stories.

Carmen Agra Deedy, is an award-winning author of fifteen books for young readers, including The Rooster Who Would Not Be Quiet!, Martina the Beautiful Cockroach, Rita and Ralph’s Rotten Day, and 14 Cows for America, a New York Times Bestseller. Her latest books are, Wombat Said Come In, released in October 2022, and Carina Felina, to be released in Fall 2023.
Her personal stories first appeared on NPR’s All Things Considered. Funny, insightful, and frequently irreverent, Deedy’s narratives are culled from her childhood as a Cuban refugee in Decatur, Georgia. She is host of the four-time Emmy-winning children’s program, Love That Book!
Deedy is also an accomplished lecturer, having been a guest speaker for the Library of Congress, Columbia University, both the TED and TEDx Conference, and the Kennedy Center, among other distinguished venues. An editor, and life-long advocate for libraries, she serves on the Advisory Board of Smithsonian Libraries and Archives.
Lauren Agra Deedy graduated from Emory University before receiving her MPhil in Literatures of the Americas from Trinity College in Dublin. Like William in the story, Lauren is the child and grandchild of refugees, and grew up helping them make care packages for family still living in communist Cuba. New Shoes for Leo is her picture book debut. Lauren lives with her husband and family in Atlanta, Georgia.
