Join us to learn about how water's chemical properties allow it to "walk" or travel against the forces of gravity, then create a rainbow of water of your own!
Ever wonder how water gets from the ground all the way up to the leaves of the highest trees? “Capillary action” (also commonly known as capillary effect or motion) is when liquid flows upward through narrow spaces against gravity, seemingly without any external forces acting on it. Rather, the liquid's movement is aided by intermolecular forces present in between the liquid and solid surface, known as adhesion and cohesion. Capillary action can be seen in other liquids besides water, but water possesses specific qualities that make this phenomenon more pronounced. Using food coloring and water, you can make water defy gravity and form a rainbow!
