Celebrate Earth Month with a talk from David Haskell as he discusses his book, "Sounds Wild and Broken: Sonic Marvels, Evolution's Creativity, and the Crisis of Sensory Extinction".
Sounds Wild and Broken is an invitation to listen, wonder, belong, and act.
We live surrounded by marvels of sonic diversity, from the songs of birds and insects, to the complexity of human music and speech. Using examples from his explorations of sound in rainforests, ancient caves, and modern cities, Haskell will show how this diversity came to be and how we can be better listeners.
David Haskell is a writer and a biologist. His latest book, Sounds Wild and Broken, was selected by The New York Times as an “Editor’s Choice” and longlisted for the 2023 PEN America Literary Award. His previous books, The Forest Unseen and The Songs of Trees are acclaimed for their integration of science, poetry, and rich attention to the living world. Among their honors include the National Academies’ Best Book Award, John Burroughs Medal, finalist for Pulitzer Prize, Iris Book Award, Reed Environmental Writing Award, National Outdoor Book Award for Natural History Literature, and runner-up for the PEN E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. Haskell is William R. Kenan Jr. Professor at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.
