Authors Kevin F. Adler and Donald W. Burness discuss their new book "When We Walk By" - homelessness in America and how to end it.

When We Walk By takes seriously the real, intersectional reasons everyday people become housing insecure. Through conversations, stories, and interviews with unhoused neighbors, the authors bring to life the thought-provoking concepts and practical solutions introduced throughout the book providing key takeaways at the end of each chapter. 

The book explores the complexity and nuance of America’s housing crisis while offering a profoundly relatable and optimistic guide to ending chronic homelessness within our lifetimes.

Kevin F. Adler is an award-winning social entrepreneur, nonprofit leader, and author. Since 2014, he has served as the Founder and CEO of Miracle Messages, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to helping people experiencing homelessness rebuild their social support systems and financial security. Kevin’s pioneering work on homelessness and relational poverty has been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, PBS NewsHour, in his TED Talk, and elsewhere.

Donald W. Burnes and his wife Lynn, are the cofounders of the Burnes Institute for Poverty Research at the Colorado Center on Law and Policy. Previously, Donald helped create the Center for Housing and Homelessness Research, formerly the Burnes Center on Poverty and Homelessness, at the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work, where he also served as an adjunct faculty member and a scholar-in-residence.
